‘A New Landscape’ explores the fear of urban sprawl into green spaces, featuring photos from my family archive (2000 – 2009) and comparing them to photos taken in 2023, emphasising the difference new builds make when invading the countryside. This was a personal project I undertook. My parents bought a cottage in the early 2000s in the quiet countryside of South Scotland; they spent the good part of 17 years renovating it in their spare time into their perfect home, where they raised my brother and I. In the quick span of a few years, the field next to us was sold and turned into 3 new houses specially designed from scratch for the upper class, quickly ruining the illusion of tranquillity my parents once upheld. I aimed to show the contrast between the ‘before and after’, and the fear urban sprawl has brought upon my quiet street.
